Adelaide Mounga Obituary

Adelaide Puanani Mounga, 72, of Aberdeen, South Dakota passed away Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, at Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD while surrounded by her beloved family. She was the oldest born to Charles Sr. & Dorothy (Correa) Aina in Hilo, Hawaii on April 13th, 1951.

Adelaide married Peni Havea Vai Mounga on December 12th, 1972 in Hau’ula, Hawaii. There they were blessed with and raised Peni Jr., Salesi, and Samiuela. They moved their family to Utah in pursuit of better opportunities, where their family would be made whole with the births of DJ and Adelaide. They were all sealed in the Jordan River Temple on June 26th, 1982.

Adelaide loved to cook and often fed anyone that walked through her door. Their home in Kearns, Utah was frequently a gathering place that everyone was welcome and loved. During her long career in retail, she was an example of leadership and management skills. She instilled these values to her children and taught a strong work ethic. She was a people-person and knew just about everyone, often making public outings much longer.

She and her husband relocated to Aberdeen, SD in 2005 to be with their children and grandchildren. While there, she enjoyed attending their events. She took great pride in her children as they served the Aberdeen community in the capacity of law enforcement, higher education, business and was proud of their dedication to family and church. Having battled many health issues throughout her life, Adelaide showed strength, courage, and a will to fight to her last day. She was a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She is survived in death by her four sons and their wives, Peni & Connie, Salesi & Lose, Samiuela & Susan, DJ & Jordan; daughter & namesake Adelaide (Adele); her seventeen grandchildren- Salesi Jr, Peni Jr, Melia (Blake) Nunez, Sami, Jade, Kiana, Zeezrom, Ilima, Eme, Amiotonu, Meleane, Polo, Lesieli, Connie, Ilaisa, Bensimani and Feke; her sisters Charlotte (Curtis) Matsui, Diana (Myles) Murashige and brother Clayton Lee (Theresa) Aina; sister-in-law Jami Aina; along with many other cherished family members.

Adelaide was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peni Vai, just a short nine months prior. She also joins her parents Charles Sr. & Dorothy Aina and her brother Charles Jr.

Adelaide will be laid to rest with her husband at Provo Cemetery in Provo, Utah on Thursday, May 25th, 2023. A memorial service in Aberdeen, SD will be at a later date.
